The Tamil National Alliance (TNA), known as the proxy of the now defunct LTTE terror outfit, is fast cracking after the elimination of the LTTE and several MPs in the TNA coalition are likely to form an independent team in Parliament, well informed Tamil political sources revealed today.
The planned group of ‘independent’ TNA members are likely to enter the fold of the PLOTE and EPRLF and would hold talks with EPDP leader, Douglas Devananda and TULF leader, V.Anandasangaree to form a broader alliance in Parliament that would outnumber the TNA strenght in the House.
The anticipated crack in the TNA would be visible in the coming days if the TNA decides to contest the Vavuniya and Jaffna Municipal elections as a single party. With the LTTE nowhere in the land of the living, Tamil politicians seem to look for democratic politics of their choice.
On Wednesday, when the vote on the motion to extend the state of emergency by a further month was taken up in parliament, TNA Wanni District MP, S.Kishore abstained from voting while all other TNA MPs present in the House voted against. That was the first time,a TNA MP exercised his freedom at a time of voting in Parliament in a history of two and half decades during an emergency extension vote.
TELO strongman from Wanni, S.Vinodharalingam, who contested under the TNA ticket at the last general election to be elected to Parliament, yesterday warned the TNA that if it contested the forthcoming mini poll in Vavuniya and Jaffna as a single party, the TELO would join hand with other Tamil political parties to enter the fray in a stronger way.
Vinodharalingam who visited several welfare centres, housing the internally displaced expressed satisfaction over the manner in which the government treated and looked after those civilians.
Meanwhile, TNA leader R.Sampanthan, Mavai Senathirajah and Gajendran Ponnambalam were in India to meet Indian leaders over a resolution to the crisis of the Tamils. The TNA group led by Vinodharalingam have expressed anger that the Sampanthan group had not briefed them on any matter regarding the future plans of the TNA and the forthcoming mini poll.
